Julia Morgan(January 20, 1872 – February 2, 1957) was an American architect in California. She designed more than 700 buildings in California during a long and prolific career. She is best known for her work on Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California.
Morgan was the first woman to be admitted to the architecture program at l’École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Artsin Paris and the first woman architect licensed in California. She designed many buildings for institutions serving women and girls including YWCA buildings and buildings for Mills College.
I was delighted when I heard that Julia Morgan was the architect for Hearst Castle (I knew little to nothing about this place before the tour). My boyfriend made fun of me for being so excited about not only the first female architect, but the architect that also designed many buildings at my alma mater, Mills College. There were a few details about women at Hearst Castle (since it was the 20s-30s era of early Feminism as we know it) that pleased me.
I highly recommend reading more about her, starting at the Wikipedia article.
